Grootberg is a very good place and a must see. Rhino tracking is relatively expensive for the given result : lot of driving, no guarantee of seeing a rhino. Perhaps other activities in the vicinity (self drive in Palmwag conservancy for instance) could be recommended
This is a magical place: location, quality of food and service, generous staff, the views, the pool (freezing !), individual client attention. We all loved this place. We felt utterly pampered (without being invaded) from beginning to end. Superbe. the ecological approach (saving shower water to be used to clean the bathroom upon departure is exemplary). We enjoyed the 4x4 drive up!
Amazing view, nice staff, our favourite lodge
amazing view - most beautiful lodge
Breathtaking view, very friendly staff, awesome pool, nice activities
Most beautiful place we stayed at.
Nice place, exceptional view. Good food
Absolutely beautiful!! Best location of them all but need a 4X4 for the last bit to get there. Fantastic view, beautiful rooms, friendly and helpful staff and excellent food. Worth every cent!!! One of the best memories of Namibia - woken with the roar of a lion close by - absolutely to be recommened and we will return.....!
Perched on the edge of a mountain, Grootberg lodge has amazing views, especially of sunset. Beautiful. Be aware that there are no power points in rooms but you can charge electronics at the front desk. The food was pretty good but we didn't care for some of the sauces served with the veggies. Chalets are comfortable and private. We had a successful rhino tracking outing but I probably wouldn't do it again--it was quite expensive and we learned that there are only 4 rhino left in the area due to extensive poaching, so the chances of seeing one have really dwindled. Elephant tracking may be a better value.
Fabulous lodge in beautiful setting. Individual chalets are lovely. Staff are very friendly and service excellent. Food is very good.
Wonderful views. One night would be enough
Great and with astonishing views!
Erika's suggestion. Amazing, spectacular scening evening game drive with the two small kids, everyone loved it. Bridged the drive between Kipwe and Dolomite very well.
amazing place, beautifully designed, staff extremely professional, helpful, friendly, we were very sorry that we stayed only one night
wonderful position, nice lodge, nice staff
Grootberg Lodge is all about the view and the nice personnel. Activities were quite expansive if compared to activities in other lodges, but the himba village is a must there. It's up to you to do the rhino track (1800NAD) which was quite expansive, but nice at the same time. Food and accommodation are not the highlight of the lodge
Friendly people, nice food, gorgeous view
Location location location. Nice people
The rooms are basic, just a bed, 2 bedside lamps and a semi partitioned toilet and shower, they have no air conditioning and no electrical sockets to charge your mobile phone or camera batteries (these can be charged at reception). Breakfast is distinctly average and service at dinner time (set menu with no choice) is slow. HOWEVER the location is spectacular and the view of the Klip river valley from your room is simply stunning. In addition, the staff at Grootberg Lodge are interesting and interested and gave us the warmest and most genuine welcome out of all of the places (8) that we stayed in during our Namibian trip. We did the Rhino trek which was thoroughly enjoyable and after a very bumpy drive and an hour long walk up a dry river bed we were rewarded with the sight of a large bull rhino -amazing! The Grootberg Lodge is not luxurious (not that it claims to be either) BUT it's location, great staff and the opportunity to see rhinos in the wild makes it a wonderful place to visit.
Very nice. staff very friendly. Can recommend this place. The only negative we had with it is the game drive. It was really expensive and a waste of money. I do not recommend it at all. Loved the afternoon cake and tea.
The Himba excursion (which apparently will no longer be offered soon due to a national law change) was amazing. I felt very unsure about it going into it, but we were able to have some genuine interactions with some of the himba people and felt like we were not doing them any disservice or threatening their way of life (not that it's up to us to choose what is best for them). It was very very interesting. The lodge has breathtaking views and the little huts are so cute. The staff was among the friendliest that we encountered on our entire trip.
Wonderful views, great facilities, well run.
great scenery - staff very friendly - most expensive game drive on our tour!
wonderful staff. Excellent views. Seemed a bit too busy with clients overlapping over each other on the excursions, but the staff is trying hard and it is a great product. I loved the description of the conservancy on the walls.
Beautiful location. Wonderful food and staff. Enjoyed all the activities we did- Sundowner Plateau Drives, Himba visit, Rhino drive. Loved this place
We loved our stay at Grootberg lodge. The location is gorgeous, the room was very clean and the food was good. There was special entertainment at night with the staff from the kitchen which was a lovely surprise!
Beautiful location and stunning views with a wonderful intimate atmosphere. Lovely room. The dining experience was fine but not as great as other places. I think the dining room could have been lit and laid out better to better take advantage of the the amazing loaction
Excellent place, so beautiful, very special. nice excursion with our guide who was very entertaining. Again good food and service.
What a view! Absolutely loved this place. Just missed out on being our favourite but by about 1%!
Fantastic place. We did rhino tracking where you get to drive down into the valley which the lodge has the unbelievable view over. Stunning scenery and the only rhino we saw in the daylight. Himba trip and guided walk also good and food and staff wonderful. Very relaxing.
Beautiful place. The 4x4 track to climb to the top is very funny. The welcome is good but we preferred the simplicity of Hoada. Too bad the pool was not heated.
Another favorite. Very professional. Great restaurant, great staff. We took the rhino tracking walk and got close to two black rhino. Excellent guides.
Great staff, great food, great place Must do.
Awesome view from rooms.
The scenery was spectacular and the accommodation and food were very good. Unfortunately we ran into extremely cold weather (below freezing) which detracted from the enjoyment of this place.
Quite expensive, and actually all it had to offer us was the spectacular view (since we did not have the time/budget for their activities). Still, we left with a very positive feeling, as all the staff is so enthusiastic, and the dancing after dinner (first school kids, than the staff) created a great atmosphere. Great food as well. Drive towards the lodge from Palmwag is nice, with lots of animals along the way (zebra, giraf, kudu).
All I can say about Grootberg: Excellent - great people, great facilities, good food, awesome scenery!!!
Stunning location and views. Food was good the first night (when the Namibian Minister for Tourism was also staying there - funny that !) not good the second night. Cold in the evening for dinner (and at night)- the real fire is not close to the dining tables. Felt like we were contributing more to the local community with our stay there, rather than to lodge managers. Very friendly service, though they didn't seem to be particularly well trained (amusing more than a problem to us).
A spectacular setting. Food excellent and staff friendly and well trained. A really good stopover between Twyfelfontein and Etosha but 1 night was enough unless you are planning to do the various game tours on offer.
What a location/view. Very sweet staff and an epic day of rhino tracking. Highly recommend this lodge.
This lodge was the highlight of our trip. The staff at the lodge were exceptional and went above and beyond to provide an exceptional level of customer service. The room was comfortable, the view was spectacular, the quality of food at the restaurant was excellent, and the tour arranged by the lodge to the Himba village was an amazing experience. The singing and dance show by the restaurant and reception staff after dinner was an added treat. Very highly recommended.
Amazing view and friendly self motivated staff.
LOVE this place! The location is memorable, the staff very professional and friendly, the room was gorgeous and spotlessly clean. Highly recommended!
We loved Grootberg lodge. The staff very friendly. Beautiful location.
Grootberg was special. It is something we will never forget. The huts were immaculate and beautifully furnished with all one could possibly need, the staff delightful, the food excellent, and their choices of activities was excellent. We chose Rhino Tracking and it was so worth it, absolutely wonderful.
Spectacular location at the top of the pass. Parking by the road (with a car guard) if you don`t have a 4x4 or don`t fancy the `interesting` drive upto the lodge (definitely for experienced 4x4 drivers only). Our room was small but comfortable and the view was superb. Food was very good and the staff were very friendly.
Best view of the whole trip. Gorgeous scenery, as you are perched on top of a plateau overlooking the canyon. 100% owned by the conservancy, there is a real sense of ownership by the people of Damaraland. Food was fantastic - some of the best meals we had in Namibia, honestly. Basic accommodation, but the view was worth it.
Perfect view! Super surprise. Need a good 4x4.
Amazing place with beautiful view and welcoming personnel. Food was very good as well
Had a Grand Canyon view from the porch of every room. The elephant tracking trip was fun but pretty much hit-and-miss. It took us about three hours of driving over rough (but fun) terrain until we saw a herd of elephants in the distance. Had to persuade the guide to let us approach nearer on foot. Fortunately we all had hiking boots or we could not have safely traversed the very rocky ground. Got to a good vantage point to watch the elephants from a safe distance. (Would not have wanted to have gotten too much closer.)
Stunning location. Probably the best view of anywhere I have ever stayed. The people were very friendly and keen to talk about the conservancy and life in Namibia generally.
perfect and what a beautifull view !
Favorite place we stayed out with some of the best food. I really enjoyed being around more local people and how the lodge is helping them with jobs, etc. Service was incredible.
A wonderful place with great staff and wonderful views. We loved the cottage we stayed in and the restaurant/lounge area was wonderful. Lovely food, good excursions and above all very friendly staff.
Wish we could have stayed longer
Perfect assistance. They repaired our tire free of charge and it was really securing and helpful.
long precarious drive but well worth it; beautiful place
my favorite: stunning view , they give us a second room without extra.rhino tracking fantastic, nice team(Melody was very efficient)
Amazing, amazing lodge! Our favourite accomodation.
Wonderful location. Really appreciated that this was being run by the community for the benefit of the community. We had a great day tracking Black Rhino with a film crew for WWF. Trackers were brilliant - and the rhino was splendid when finally found and disturbed!
Our favourite lodge in Namibia. Perched on the lip of a canyon with the most stunning view imaginable. The food is the best we had in Namibia and the staff are so very friendly. The rooms might be starting to look a bit tired, but with the view from your veranda and shower you really don`t notice! The activities are great - we have done the elephant and rhino tracking and really recommend doing them.
Spectacular landscape and Lodge supports local community conservation initiative. Rhino tour was great.
Very nice place to stay - staff very eager to please. Fills a gap between very expensive lodges and camping.
Great food and very friendly personal
Very friendly staff, amazing view from the room.
Very pleasant stay. Road up to lodge not as difficult as envisaged. Comfortable chalet with great view of valley. Cheerful, helpful staff. Went on rhino trip - a bumpy 7 hour journey with very knowledgeable guides to remote places in the valley but worth it to see rhino in the wild, various other wildlife and the offroading experience.
Small lodge with beautiful view. Staff is from local villages and they really enjoy helping you. Great atmosphere. Small rooms. Liked it a lot!
Another fantastic place. Views were stunning, serice and food were great. The eco lodges were more basic but we loved it. We did the visit to the Himba tribe and it was a fantastic excursion. Beautiful pool and surrounding area.
It was nice to stay here, knowing we are helping the local conservancy. The views are wonderful and the staff friendly. The Himba village visit was quite an experience!
Fantastic location and food. As with all the previous lodges, we found the staff friendly and helpfull.
The diamond in the trip, a wonderful, beautiful, happy place. Fully recommend to everyone who will listen.
nice but pricey! their location is gorgeous
We wish we had more time to stay here. Staff and accomodations were outstanding. Amazing views, sunrises and sunsets. There are hiking trails that can be hiked, unguided. There are several programs that the lodge offers upon arrival. We did not have time to take advantage of them. One of particular interest was a visit to a Himba village. This would have taken another full day to do. Next time we hope to. Grootberg is in the process of adding to their facilities there. Steeeeeep ! dirt road to get to this place. We were glad we had our 4x4 arranged by Cardboard Aly! We want to visit here again!
Good lodge with wonderful view on the Klip River Canyon. Very difficult access road, designated shuttle. Himbatour highly recommended.
Grootberg lodge has a splendid view and you can hear lots of wildlife during the night.
What an incredible location? We loved Grootberg - the way it seems to hover over the edge of the Valley. The little cabins are beautiful - simple and natural, like its sister Lodge - Desert Homestead. Staff burst into song each evening which was gorgeous. We enjoyed a lovely horse ride through the Valley on safe, well behaved horses with a very knowledgable guide. Plus we were blessed with an Elephant herd sighting a kilometer down the road on our departure. The fact that you are kind of stuck on top of the mountain was actually quite a relief from all the driving we`d been doing - it forced us to relax and catch our breath.
Really enjoyed time here views were amazing. Local school children visited one evening to sing which was lovely. Guide was good & persistant and we finally saw the wild elephants.
very nice and well placed. Kind and profesional staff. Very nice Huts with a stunning view. Beautiful and very inviting lounge and restaurant. Good kitchen. Very interesting (and in the end successful) elephant tracking
Our favourite place on this trip - amazing location, very good (but slightly expensive) activities - fantastic staff and great accommodation - we will definitely go back.
The most amazing lodge and view. We wish we could have stayed longer!
Amazing!!! The views are breathtaking.
The best lodge i've ever seen
good people trying hard fantastic setting
A big highlight of our trip.
An incredible place and wished we had 2 nights there.
A really beautiful place to stay with a very kind crew. I would have loved to spend on more day there if I had enough time.
Wonderful site. Staff were friendly and helpful. I believe all of the rooms have a fabulous view.
Excellent setting, very friendly staff but the access road is "interesting" requiring full 4x4 traction and some skill. No problem but would be useful to advise people of this beforehand to avoid surprise!
