Tourists head to the Namib Desert for a variety of reasons, ranging from its historical attractions to its spectacular landscape. The Desert Hiking Tour is mainly experienced on foot and is an excellent way to learn about desert biodiversity and other aspects of the Namib.
Before lunch: A morning session in the dunes begins with an educational hike across the rolling sand dunes. Look-out for the many living creatures and interesting plants of the desert. Expect to see a variety of creepy crawlies such as chameleons, lizards, geckos, snakes and spiders.
Mid-day: Time to find a nice cool, shady spot for a picnic lunch along the Swakop River. This is good time to recollect the mornings sightings, taking caution that none of them are hiking up your legs as you munch your lunch!
After lunch: Stretch your legs and shake the sand out of your boots for a hike along the Swakop River bed, an ephemeral river, which only flows for a short time, (perhaps only for hours), after periods of high rainfall. Along this river that ends in sand, the landscape is completely different. Camelthorn trees are abundant and shepherds tree, ringwood, umbrella-thorn and red-thorn are well-represented. Who knows what else you might find on the way round on the Desert Hiking Tour!
