Spitzkoppe Day Tour
Namibia
The Spitzkoppe Day Tour passengers will be collected from their accommodation in Swakopmund ± 09h00, by a guide and a 4x4 vehicle. He will then drive you 2km eastwards of the coastal Atlantic town to the steam tractor, the 'Martin Luther.' This steam tractor is the only material remnant of the first attempt to introduce mechanized transport in Namibia. You will receive a brief description of it's history, as well as of Swakopmund and Namibia in general.
The drive inland heads to the stark grandeur of Gross Spitzkoppe. (1728m above sea level and often described as the 'Matterhorn' of Namibia because of it's shape, and the highest peak is about 700m above the desert floor below.) On this drive your guide will offer detailed explanations about the surroundings and of course the Spitzkoppe, a perennial challenge to the serious mountaineer. (It's summit was first scaled only in 1946.) The mountains are brilliantly coloured and rise abruptly out of the surrounding plains and is visible from great distances away. It is considered to be an 'inselberg,' or island mountain.
After a short introduction to the local Damara people, who reside in the area, there will be an opportunity to view the natural flora of the region, before heading to the spectacular rock paintings of the Spitzkoppe.
Both the Grosse and Klein Spitzkoppe, as well as the Pontok Mountains, and the associated Bushman artwork are ideal for photography, whether amateur or professional.
Arrival time back at your accommodation in Swakopmund, is scheduled for around 16h00.
