Introduction: Crimson-breasted shrikes (Laniarius atrococcineus) are very active and agile birds, found singly or in terrestrial pairs in Kalahari thornveld, Acacia savannah and dry scrubland with some clusters of small trees. Roosting on the mid to lower branches is preferred, especially on a sickle-bush.

Distribution: Mainly from the Namibian escarpment east to Botswana. Common in Epupa Falls, Rundu, Caprivi Strip, Kalahari Desert, Etosha National Park. Absent from the Namib Desert and the very south of the country.

Diet: Forages on the ground, in tree trunks and in foliage for ants, beetles, caterpillars and small fruits.

Description: Laniarius is Latin for 'shrike-like thrush'. Back, wings, tail, top and sides of head jet black.

Breeding: Usually 2 or 3 eggs are laid at 24hr intervals from October to January and incubated for about 16 days.

Size: 22cm. Weight: 50g.
