Birds of Namibia

Introduction: Grey plovers (Pluvialis squatarola) mainly inhabit muddy tidal zones in estuaries as well as rocky or sandy coasts. They can also be observed in salt pans and coastal lagoons. Roosting preferences tend to be on sandbanks and beaches, dunes and salt marshes.

Distribution: Entire coastline of Namibia less for southern Namib Desert, with major summer concentrations in Walvis Bay and Sandwich Harbour. Also found in Etosha National Park, Caprivi with scattered populations elsewhere in Namibia.

Diet: Feeds in exposed mud or sand and will wade into shallow water for large crabs and prawns. Also eats worms, small clams, snails, insects and fish stranded in pools.

Description: Often confused with the American golden plover.

Breeding: Extralimital.

Size: 30cm. Weight: 230g. Wingspan: 80cm.
