Introduction: Red-footed boobys (Sula sula) are found mainly in the open ocean regions, typically in cold Atlantic waters. They roost on elevated perches as opposed to the ground, often seen feeding in association with dolphins, tunas and other gamefish. Preyed upon by pied crows and barn owls. Often lands on ships after following them for hundreds of kilometres.
Distribution The coastal waters of Pelican Point Walvis Bay, Luderitz.
Diet: Plunge-dives or snatches prey in flight such as flying fish or squid.
Description Creamy white colouration with yellow wash on crown and hind neck. Flight feathers mainly alula black.
Breeding: Breeds in trees or in shrubs at tropical islands, rarely nesting on the ground.
Size: 75cm. Weight: 1kg. Wingspan: 1.5m.
