Introduction: Red-headed finches (Amadina erythrocephela) inhabit a wide range of vegetation types which include semi-arid and arid shrublands, open desert grasslands and mopane savannah. When breeding, flocks of hundreds are common, otherwise they are in pairs or small groups.
Distribution: Throughout most of Namibia, occurring in Kaokoland, Damaraland, the Kalahari Desert and the northern Namib Desert. Absent from most of the southern regions of the country.Diet: Eats small seeds and insects such as termites, foraged from the ground.
Description: A small finch with an overall brownish plumage with blackish, scaled barring. Distinctive bright-red head with fawn, white-spotted breast and flanks.Breeding: Nests in old weavers, sparrows, swift, woodpeckers or swallows nests, as well as beneath the eaves of houses.
Size: 13cm. Weight: 22g.
