Introduction: Rock pratincoles (Glareola nuchalis) have been recorded in large rivers and lakes, preferring sections of rivers with deep, fast-flowing water with rocky outcrops to deter predators. They are frequent drinkers, standing in water to keep cool.
Distribution: Caprivi including Katima Mulilo, Victoria Falls.
Diet: An aerial forager over water and nearby woodland at dawn and dusk for mainly beetles, grasshoppers and moths.
Description: Nuchalis is Latin for 'nape' which refers to the nuchal collar.
Breeding: Just 1 or 2 eggs are laid on a rock ledge, under an overhang, in a small rock hollow or a recess in a hole. Eggs are incubated by both sexes for about 20 days.
Size: 18g. Weight: 48g.
