Birds of Namibia

Introduction: Steppe eagles (Aquila nipalensis) can be observed in open woodland, grassland and savannah, being absent from mountainous and dense forest. A gregarious bird, they have been know to congregate in flocks of up to 800 birds, usually with other termite eaters such as black kites and lesser spotted eagles.

Distribution: Throughout central and northern regions of the country, for example Etosha National Park and the Caprivi.

Diet: Eats mostly termites, as well as nestlings and carrion.

Description: A large hawk that resembles small eagles in structure. Their long and broad wings and short tail allow them to soar to great heights. Originally recorded in the valley of Nepal (nipalensis), hence the name.

Breeding: Extralimital.

Size: 80cm. Weight: 2.5kg. Wingspan: 2m.
