Eagle Monument
Keetmanshoop | Namibia
Eagle Monument was built sometime between 1897-1907 in remembrance of the German soldiers who were killed in the Herero and Nama wars of 1897, 1903 and 1906-1907 respectively. It is shaped in the form of an obelisk and topped with a bronze German Imperial eagle.
Soldiers who fell during the WW2 conflict are also commemorated here, but it is not part of the national monument. Both the Eagle and WW2 Monuments are situated in the centre of Keetmanshoop in the Garden of Remembrance, adjacent to the Post Office.
In previous years commemorative services were held in conjunction with other worldwide Remembrance Day ceremonies to mark the fallen of both World Wars. On occasions, music was provided in the adjacent bandstand by a brass band from the Nama community.
The Eagle Monument, Keetmanshoop was officially proclaimed a national monument on 1st May 1967.
