Kubas Station Building
Karibib | Namibia
The first narrow-guage railway line between Swakopmund and Windhoek was built between 1897 and 1902. The line was 283km long and there was a need for 24 stops and stations of varying degrees in size and importance to be built along the route.
One of the 24 stops was Kubas Station Building, Karabib, at the Kilometre 147 (Kubas) east of Swakopmund. Building commenced on 1st June 1900 and was completed in December of that year, 3 months later than schedule and 10 months after the construction of the railway line had reached Kubas.
The outer walls were made of broken marble mined near the station. The inner walls were cement bricks and the floor was part wood, part cement. The ceiling was made from wooden planks and the verandah was made from wood and zinc.
The Kubas Station Building, Karibib is no longer used as a stop on the Swakopmund to Windhoek railway line. It was proclaimed a national monument on 15th June 1983.
