Otavi Minen und Eisenbahn Gesellschaft-(OMEG)-Minenbürorn
Tsumeb | Namibia
The relevant Official Gazette states: 'The Otavi Minen und Eisenbahn Gesellschaft-(OMEG)-Minenbüro (The Mining Office for the Otavi Mining and Railway Company) was erected in 1907 and is a prominent landmark in its environment'.
It is the oldest building in Tsumeb and its appearance has changed very little in over 100 years. In 1947 the mine changed hands and was now owned by the Tsumeb Corporation Limited (TCL). The Minenbüro continued to exist has a offices until the early 1950's when TCL moved to new offices on Main Street.
The OMEG-Minenbüro is often mistaken for a place of worship. The front part of the office is being used by the Anglican Church and the tower lends the building a church-like appearance. It has also been used as a kindergarten and the Freemason's Lodge used the back for many years.
The OMEG-Minenbüro Tsumeb is a prominent feature that can be seen from afar. The watch and dial on each side of the tower are no longer. The clock signified the start of the shifts for the mineworkers. The OMEG-Minenbüro was proclaimed a national monument on 15th February 1990.
