windmill
Otjimbingwe | Namibia
The Windmill in Otjimbingwe turned wind power into mechanical power that operated a number of machines, such as chainsaws, metal and wood lathes, a drill and a plane. Water for Otjimbingwe was also pumped from a nearby fountain from power generated by the windmill.
Only the 20m tower and the tail-part of the 9m rotor tail are intact. The tower is made of steel. The wooden wheel has deteriorated and the gears have broken down and beyond economical repair.
It is situated in the backyard of the former Hälbich wagonry only a few metres away from the Powder Magazine. Also not far from the tower is a circular, cement pedestal that rims for ox wagons were fitted.
The Windmill, Otjimbingwe was proclaimed a national monument on 15th August 1963.
