Ai-Ais Hot Springs Resort
Fish River Canyon - Namibia
This camp is currently closed for re-development. we expect it to re-open in mid 2009.
Ai-Ais is at the southern end of the Fish River Canyon and offers an excellent place to relax after the long hike. The resort is located at sulphurous hot springs, which makes perfect sense when one considers that the name 'ai-ais' means 'burning water' in the local Nama language.
The main attraction at Ai-Ais is the spa complex, the thermal bath next to the hot spring is a popular recreation resort, especially during the winter months. There are indoor pools with various water temperatures as well as a cooler outdoor pool. The surrounding countryside is arid and rocky and in summertime temperatures soar.
The Ai-Ais Park now forms part of the Ai-Ais / Richtersveld transfrontier park, and visitors will soon be able to cross from South Africa to Namibia using the Sendelingsdrift border post within the park.
Camping at the Fish River Canyon is also available at Hobas while there is also a reasonable selection of private lodges near the Fish River Canyon.
Visitors at Ai-Ais can easily drive to the main Fish River Canyon look out point which is situated near Hobas.
