Bush Baby Lodge
near Grootfontein - Namibia
Bush Baby Lodge is situated 8km from the town of Grootfontein on the road towards Tsumeb. This makes it an ideal destination for those travelling to Etosha National Park, the Caprivi Strip and northern Namibia in general.
The lodge is set in the heart of a 3,000ha private game farm, surrounded by open plains that merge into a bush savannah filled with acacia trees, a browsers favourite source of nourishment. Impressive views of the Otavi Mountains emphasize the varied landscape and compliment the immediate environment of Bush Baby Lodge.
The lodge has been constructed on a hill, built of natural stone found on the farm. It blends so perfectly into the environment that tree squirrels feel just as at home running around the place as they do in their own homes!
There is an open-sided restaurant and 2 bars with a selection of beers, wines, spirits and cool drinks to quench your thirst! Many guests head outside to the fire-pit, a popular venue for after-dinner drinks and to exchange colourful adventure and travel stories. A laundry service and secure parking complete the facilities.
Breakfast is served buffet-style and a scrumptious hot English breakfast or selection of cereals is the perfect way to start the day. A light 2-course lunch can be ordered. Dinner is a 3-course affair, typically with a fish starter, game meat/potato/vegetable main meal, followed by a mouth-watering desert.
An added attraction at Bush Baby Lodge is the flood-lit waterhole; it has excellent views from both the outdoor dining area and the fire-pit. The 2 resident white rhino are regular customers here, and once they have finished chasing away most of the plains game, are content to share the spring with the rest of the thirsty arrivals.
Accommodation is in 5 luxury rooms with en-suite bathrooms, mosquito nets and an in-room safe standard. They have either a double or 2 single beds. They are tastefully furnished and serviced daily. The private porch affords great views of the bush.
Grazers and browsers make up 22 different species that can be viewed here. They include Hartmann's and Burchell's zebra, kudu, eland, blesbok, springbok, black and blue wildebeest, impala, waterbuck and giraffe. There is also a thriving bush baby population in and around the lodge, where it obviously took its name!
- Game drives
- Morning and afternoon game drives are the best times of day for observing both the animals and the outstanding scenery. The afternoon trips appear to attract more game at Bush Baby. A typical drive lasts around 2hrs, depending on the activity and but can be extended for a sundowner on one of the local hills or suitable spot in the open plains.
- Fishing
- Anglers can head to a dam and fish to their hearts content on a catch and release basis.
- Caving
- There are 6 caves in the area and trips can be organized. Each cave offers a different challenge and are ranked accordingly to experience. Equipment is provided as are the resident bat population and associated droppings!
