Kulala Wilderness Camp
Sossusvlei - Namibia
The main area of Kulala Wilderness Camp is of a timber and canvas construction, built under thatch. It has been constructed on two levels, with steps leading up from the gravel pathways. On the lower deck, is an inviting swimming pool, surrounded by a wooden deck, shaded by a low thatched roof. There are a a few sun-loungers available for guest to laze around on. There are spectacular views of the valley and mountains beyond.
On the upper deck, there is the indoor dinning area. Guests are seated at one long table, on comfortable wood and leather chairs. This area extends to an outside deck, and during summer, meals are usually served here, at individual tables. There is a tea/coffee station and the bar area in the opposite corner. A small section of this main upper area is partitioned off with the curio shop. The lounge area has plenty of comfortable leather sofas, set around low wooden coffee tables.
Tea, coffee and rusks are served at the lodge before departing on the early morning activities, (Sossusvlei dunes trip or hot-air ballooning.) A breakfast buffet for the remaining guests will be laid out in the lodge's dining area. (Freshly baked scones, hard boiled eggs, cold meats, cheeses, cereals, yogurts, or a cooked breakfast made to order.) On the morning 4x4 excursion to Sossusvlei, brunch is served at a fully laid table, under a camelthorn tree. Lunch at the lodge will be a buffet style selection of cold dishes. A 3-course dinner is served either outside on the verandah by candle light, or indoors, depending on the time of the year.
Accommodation is in 10 comfortable 'kulala's.' (Kulala means 'to sleep' in Oshiwambo.) The rooms are are built of thatch and canvas, and are joined by gravel pathways lined with rocks. (A decent pair of shoes are recommended to walk around here.) They all have an en-suite bathroom built of stone. The verandahs are elevated on platforms.
A sunrise excursion into the dunes leaves a few minutes before sunrise, with breakfast eaten under a camelthorn tree near Sossusvlei. As Kulala Wilderness Camp has a private entrance to the park on the Tsauchab River, the Sossusvlei excursion can by-bass the main park entrance at Sesriem. There are also morning, afternoon and night drives, and guided walks on the reserve.
Although not rich in terms of game, springbok, gemsbok (Oryx) and ostrich, all manage to survive in this harsh climate. On spotlit night drives, guests will often encounter small mammals such as aardwolf, bat-eared fox, hares and occasionally spotted-hyenas.
