Mopane Tented Camp
Opuwo - Kaokoland - Namibia
From 1 January 2013 Mopane Tented Camp will be operated only as a CAMPSITE. The permanently errected tents will no longer be available, we will update this page when we have more relevant information available.
Mopane Tented Camp is situated in Kaokoland 5 km east of Opuwo on the C41. The camp is built on the steep banks of one of the tributaries of the Hoarusib River.
Mopane Camp is built on communal property. A community fee is payable by all guests on a per person per day basis. These fees are then paid to the community leaders who use the money for development in a specific area, mostly relating to water and education. The community is consulted on a regular basis regarding present and future development at Mopane Camp. Staff at the camp are employed from the surrounding community, and trained in various aspects of the hospitality industry, such as cooking, housekeeping, guiding, and waitering. The community in the area consist of both ovaHimba and ovaHerero families.
There is a main Lapa area consisting of the restaurant and bar. Tea or coffee are available from here. Breakfast and dinner are served buffet style, whilst lunch can be ordered from a set menu.
The accommodation consists of 15 luxury tents, each with en-suite bathrooms, and a beautiful double bed made from railway sleepers, with innovative space for hanging clothes. The verandah is an ideal spot from which to sit and watch the sunset. All the tents are built in the shade of large Mopane trees.
Half and full day guided excursions to Himba villages are organized from the camp. Here you can see and experience traditional Himba customs. Alternatively, guests might like to take one of the short, unguided walks that start and finish from Mopane Tented Camp. The river has interesting rock formations, where there are cool rock pools for swimming during the rainy season.
