Mountain Homestead
Sossusvlei - Namibia
Mountain Homestead used to be called Sossusvlei Wilderness Camp, but reopened on 1st July 2010 under new management. It is situated 34 kilometres from Sesriem, the entrance to Sossusvlei. The camp is situated on the 21,000ha Kulala Wilderness Reserve with wonderful desert scenery. It affords access to Sossusvlei, but also offers privacy and exclusivity. The property harbours vast desert plains and rugged mountains with views onto the dunes in the distance.
Mountain Homestead has been built near the top of a mountain, using natural materials of brick, rock, timber and thatch, and provides a refuge from the desert. It is the ideal destination for visitors who wish to see the dunes of Sossusvlei without having to travel large distances once in the Namib Desert to see them.
The main living area at Mountain Homestead is under thatch with a pool. The lodge offers an outdoor deck where guests enjoy dinner under the stars and a dedicated stargazing platform with a powerful telescope for those keen on admiring the night skies.
Accommodation is on one of only 9 guest rooms, each with its own private plunge pool. They are superbly appointed and offer comfort and atmosphere. The en-suite bathrooms also have panoramic views overlooking the plains below and have hot and cold running water, showers and flush toilets.
On the edge of the oldest desert in the world, the Namib, this is not a game rich area, however springbok, oryx and ostrich manage to survive in these harsh conditions. Night drives using spotlights offer sightings of Cape fox, aardwolf, black-backed jackal, bat-eared fox and even the odd spotted hyena.

- Activities around Sossusvlei
- Horse back activities
- The Mountain Homestead has excellent riding horses, all docile and easy to handle. You can choose between several outrides options. Most popular are our sunrise and sunset rides.
- The Sunrise Ride
- Guests meet for tea, coffee and biscuits at sunrise and then drive across to the stables. Once the horses and riders are ready and comfortable, the ride begins. Th Ge scenery varies quite dramatically, from dry river beds to massive camel thorn trees, to mountain paths and wide open grassy plains. After about two hours of riding, guests discover a breakfast table under a camel thorn tree, with a delicious spread of cheeses, cold meats, fresh bread and muffins, yoghurt, muesli and fruit platters. Fresh orange juice and percolated coffee, of course. After a leisurely breakfast, guests mount up and ride for another hour back to the stables.
- The Sunset Ride
- Afternoon tea and coffee are enjoyed on the lodge veranda, after which guests are driven across to the stables. Once horses and riders are ready and comfortable, the adventure begins. Riders wind their way across the grassy plains, and through ancient water courses and eventually up a steep mountain track, where a friendly barman with a selection of cocktails awaits them. Once the gin and tonics and snacks have been enjoyed with yet another magical desert sunset, guests once again mount up, and slowly make their way back to the stables. We also offer a sundowner drive in the evenings which includes a leisurely nature drive, slowly winding up a mountain, and culminating in gin and tonics and snacks, before venturing home again.
