Okomitundu Guest Farm
Near Karibib - Namibia
The 18,000ha Okomitundu Guest Farm is located 50kms from Okahandja, on the B2 towards Karibib. It is a multi-recipient of the Certificate of Excellence, issued by the Hospitality Association of Namibia. (HAN) This is one of the best holiday destinations for the family.
Facilities and services include a fully licensed bar, library, braai area, laundry service, telephone and fax/photocopy machine, Internet access, swimming pool, secure parking, and a well-kept garden. There is a sun terrace and C8 Telescope for stargazing.
Meals are served on the veranda, under shady trees, or in a cozy dining room. Bread, rolls and cakes are made on the farm, as is the juice, made from cactus figs and lemons. (Guests are welcome to have a go at kneading the dough!) Paved pathways lead through neat rockeries, from the main building to the rooms.
Accommodation is in either 8 luxury rooms or 2 self-catering units. Each room has an en-suite bathroom, (with shower and separate toilet), a fan, heater, double bed, fireplace and a balcony/patio with great views of the mountains. The self-catering units have shared bathroom facilities, (with separate toilet) double bed, fan, heater, self-catering facilities, and a balcony/patio. (With the same great mountain views.)
Activities nearby include bird watching, bicycle tours, hang gliding, horse riding, and unguided walks. Children are free to roam around the farm, and explore the nearby sandy river beds and play to their hearts content, without disturbing the other guests. Kids love insects, lizards, butterflies, moths and birds, and in the large enclosures hares, squirrels and parrots can be fed by the children, under supervision. There is also a safe and brightly coloured playground for the 'little ones.'
There are several well marked hiking trails around the farm, an excellent opportunity to view the diverse fauna and flora of the property. Worth a special mention at Okomitundu, are the amazing views from the top of the Kudu Mountain, and the breathtaking sight of the savanna below, a good enough reason to visit on it's own!
The farm has it's own landing strip for fly-in safaris, with a shuttle service for it's guests.
- Farm tours
- Guided tours through the 18,000 hectare area of the farm are included in several package offers, but are also available on a daily basis if requested. Depending on participant interests, a tour can last anything between two and three hours. We take you out in an open cross-country vehicle through Okomitundu, giving you an open view and allowing you to feel the wind in your face and savour the scents of the savannah. You can listen to bird calls, crickets and cicadas and of course observe many wild animals in their natural habitat. For example kudu, oryx, mountain zebra, ostrich and other smaller species such as guinea fowl, baboons, squirrels - and with a little luck also cheetahs, black eagle, klipspringer and many more. Of course we stop whenever you would like to explore cliffs, plants and trees, flowers or insects or simply enjoy the view.
- Tree trail
- Explore Namibia’s flora: on the farm and along some of the paths many trees are marked with South African tree numbers; a list with the numbers and names of the trees is available in the office.
- Archery
- A secured range is provided where you can learn archery under the guidance of Horst. There are bows in various sizes and strengths.
- Day excursions
- The farms itself is very large and offers many attractive destinations for relaxing picnics. Here we are happy to provide whatever you wish.In Okahandja, about an hour away by car, there is an interesting wood craft market offering Namibian carvings. Okahandja also has the tombs of the Herero chiefs dating back to the German colonial period. The Herero Day on the first weekend after August 23rd is a colourful spectacle with a military parade and horseback games in fantasy German uniforms. The Herero women appear in magnificent long dresses in Victorian style. The town of Karibib is also about one hour away by car. The tourist centre there is well-known for its beautiful semi-precious stones and jewellery from the area of the Erongo Mountains and the Spitzkoppe.
- Swimming
- Okomitundu has two large swimming pools: one large circular pool and a 12-metre rectangular pool. Both can be heated, so swimming under the open sky is a pleasure during the winter months too.
- Children’s playground
- The lovingly equipped playground has a sand pit, swings and an inviting, bright room with picture books, drawing materials and games. Children love it - and so do their parents! Nearby there are spacious aviaries with pigeons, parrots, squirrels and - a little further away - rabbits. Children can go to the kitchen to get peanuts and bread to feed the animals.
- Library
- In the library there are non-fiction books on Namibian flora and fauna, novels, newspapers and various games for the rare rainy days or other quiet times. For those who do not wish to be totally cut off from world events during their holiday, there is also a television.
