Omaha Guest Farm
Otjiwarongo District | Namibia
Omaha Guest Farm is situated at the foot of Mt Etjo, a 2-hour drive north-west from Windhoek. It is conveniently located midway between Okahandja and Otjiwarongo, itself a primary road north to Namibia's main northern tourist destinations:Etosha, Waterberg National Park, Damaraland, Bushmanland, the Kavango region and the Caprivi Strip.
Etjo (meaning 'the place where one can live' in Herero) is a mountain with a narrow 16km long plateau, with a maximum width of only 3km. It stands 2086m above sea level, and this unique feature of Namibia landscape is believed to date back to the time of Gondwanaland, some 500 million years ago.
The Omaha homestead is a division of an operational cattle farm. It is also home to a variety of game species such as kudu, oryx, warthog, steenbok, duiker, Damara dik-dik, suricates, bat-eared fox, hares, ostrich, Hartmann's mountain zebra, hartebeest, porcupine and springbok.
Sheep and goats are reared, but are protected from predators (such as leopard, cheetah, caracal, jackals and raptors) by an Anatolian Shepherd Dog, a muscular breed, originally imported from Turkey, where they specialize in guardian livestock duties.
With such a high geographical feature on your doorstep, cascading torrents of water sweep down the mountain side after rain falls. This causes soil erosion but to combat this threat, 5 earthen dams have been constructed on the farm's grounds. Not only has the deterioration discontinued, but the barriers provide drinking water for game and the farm's domestic animals. The largest dam is deepen enough when full for visitors to slip a canoe out of their back pockets and go for a paddle! Omaha's diverse bird residents including waterfowl are attracted to the area, which makes for a number of interesting photographic opportunities.
The main building of Omaha houses the kitchen, formal dining area, library and reading room as well as a TV lounge complete with inviting fire-place. The swimming pool is the spot to head to escape the hot afternoon sunshine.
Hearty meals are served 'farm style' in either the indoor or verandah dining areas. Main meals feature mainly game meats and vegetables, prepared as traditional Afrikaans/German cuisine, a common menu of Namibian farm fare. Their very obliging kitchen staff can also cater for vegetarian, Indian or Halal meals.
Accommodation at Omaha is in 5 double rooms, each with individual styles of furnishing and décor. Private en-suite bathrooms with shower/toilet, mosquito nets, built-in cupboards are standard.
- The 'Tower room': A romantic little getaway, up the steps in an old 'windmill, less the blades' type accommodation.
- The 'Pool Room': This premium room has the added advantage of having direct access to the swimming pool.
- The 'Gecko Room': A private room.
