Pelican Point Lodge

near Walvis Bay - Namibia

This lodge is situated on a remote peninsula around half an hour (32km's) 4x4 drive from the Namibian harbour town of Walvis Bay. Pelican Point has housed a beacon to safely guide ships into the Walvis Bay harbour since 1915 and Pelican Point Lodge is situated in the renovated harbour control building adjacent to the 'new' lighthouse which was built in 1932. The lodge is built on a large sandbank and is bordered on one side by the Walvis lagoon and on the other by the Atlantic Ocean - a truly remote and spectacular location.

The communal areas consist of a lounge & dining offer guests the opportunity to enjoy a drink or fine dining while admiring the fine views. The large outside deck area offers views over the bay & the Namib Desert dunes and is the perfect place to watch the sun set. Breakfast is a big part of the experience at Pelican Bay Lodge and can be enjoyed either in the dining room or on your rooms private deck. A 3 course meal rounds of the day and is served either in the dining room or on the main deck (depending on the weather). For those who find themselves to still be peckish between these two meals a light lunch is available on request.

Pelican Point offers accommodation in a choice of 9 suites:

  • The eight 'luxury' suites are spacious and offer a queen sized bed, I-Phone charger and clock, hair dryer, lounge area a private deck area to enjoy amazing views of the lagoon with blankets for the chilly and windy evenings), a private safe, an eco fireplace, 24hr-room service. Most of the en-suite bathrooms have 2 showers and a double basin and are located to maximise the views, even from the shower.
  • The Captain's Cove suite is on top of the building and offers 360° views. In addition to the facilities available in the standard suites the bathroom in the Captain's Cove is also equipped with a bath tub & shower.

As one would expect from an establishment situated in such a pristine & unspoiled environment Pelican Point Lodge takes the utmost care to be environmentally friendly.

Guests at Pelican Point Lodge are free to explore the peninsula at their leisure and the lodge staff will happily arrange a picnic hamper for breakfast or lunch, or some sundowner drinks for those wanting to spend some additional time in the great outdoors. There is a great deal to see in the area with seal colonies, a plethora of bird species including the very endangered Damara Tern, pelicans & flamingoes. You may also encounter abandoned oyster farms, aquatic animals such as the Mola Mola or giant jelly fish, while adventurous jackals often approach visitors.

For those wanting to stay in touch with the outside world a wi-fi hotspot is available. The Pelican Point experience is rounded off with a gift on arrival as well as complimentary tea / coffee, soft drinks & water throughout your stay.

Directions to the lodge

Leave Walvis Bay on the lagoon road, just before the salt factory (amongst the salt pans) there is a right turn to Pelican Point Lodge (this is well marked). At this juncture you should stop and deflate your tyres to pressure suitable for driving on sand (1.3 to 1.5 bar is recommended for most vehicles) - now is also a good time to engage 4x4. From here you can follow the vehicle tracks they will all lead you to the lodge - although there are two choices. By keeping right you will take the more popularcompact & sturdy route along the lagoon (this is flooded during spring tide), while following the tracks to the left will get you to the lodge via the Atlantic coastline.
