Taranga Safari Lodge is a luxury riverbank bush camp situated next to the Kavango River in north-east Namibia. It is near Halili Village some 35km west of the town of Rundu and is perfectly located for those on the way from central Namibia to the Caprivi Strip or Victoria Falls.

The Kavango River is often called the Okavango River and it flows for some 1,600km (1,000 miles) south-eastwards from where it rises in Angola. Here it is known as the Kubango River and forms a section of Namibia's northern border, (approx 350km). It continues across the Caprivi Strip & Kavango and into the Kalahari regions of north-western Botswana, where it divides into streams before emptying into the Okavango Delta wetlands.

As this safari lodge is one of the very few luxury bush camp lodges in the region, guests can expect privacy and seclusion. There will numerous uninterrupted photographic opportunities around the area, especially with the striking views across the river into the nearby floodplains and lily-covered wetlands. This type of environment always attracts interesting and diverse creatures, both great and small.

Relaxation and enjoyment are of paramount importance at this Taranga Safari Lodge. Unwind and relax in the restaurant, guest lounge, the large wooden decks or enjoy a splash in the swimming pool at the main deck.

Accommodation is in 4 open-fronted luxury riverbank tented cottages set amongst towering riverine trees. En-suite bathrooms, a fan and a tea/coffee station are standard. Some of the rooms have a mini-bar and mosquito nets.

The Kavango River is home to crocodile and hippo as well as a number of species of antelope such as the rare sable and roan antelope, bushbuck, reedbuck and tsessebe.

The region is home to an estimated 430 species of Namibian birds, with over 20 endemic or near-endemic species, including the yellow wagtail, wattled crane, great snipe, African rail and African skimmers. The riverine forest also provides the opportunity to view African jacana, coppery tailed coucal and occasionally the rare African fish eagle.

At Taranga safari Lodge most activities revolve around the river but there are some walking trips. All excursions are conducted by experienced and knowledgeable guides in suitable river crafts or known hiking areas.

River safaris

One of the best ways to get fairly close to animals in and on the riverbanks without disturbing them is on a guided river safari. This is quite an adventure and observing hippo and crocs side by side adds to the excitement. Traditional trips are at sunrise, an ideal time to sail through the early morning river mist or at late afternoon, when the animal activity tends to be more intense.

Mokoro trips

Cruising the river and waterways on a mokoro trips are one of the most exciting and rewarding ways to game view. Your polar knows when and where to search for wildlife as well as steering clear of danger such as with territorial pods of hippo, but still poling close enough to observe without intruding on their daily routines.

Sundowner river cruises:

The final hour of daylight is perhaps the most enjoyable. Marvel at the spectacular sunset from the river as well the grunting hippos, hungry crocs and birds.

Fishing trips

Fly fishing by boat for tigerfish, threespot tilapia and nembwe. The tigerfish is a voracious and fierce creature with a tendency to frequent the surface layers of water, making it a target for the African fish eagle. Tigerfish are also a major angling game fish. Binoculars and cameras at the ready.

Bush/nature walks:

A guide will accompany you through the bush taking you to all the known animal haunts as well as spotting different species of bird. The flora can be of particular interest as well, some of the regions smaller insects such as butterflies and dragonflies frequent the water and vegetation.

Kavango Living Museum

This is probably one of the best ways to learn about traditional culture in an interesting and authentic way. Living Museums are a cultural school for tradition and a communal Namibian tourism business at the same time. Tourists and travellers can visit and by doing so actively contribute to the preservation of traditional culture and join the fight against poverty.
