Tsumkwe Lodge is situated in the town of Tsumkwe which is the administrative centre of Bushmanland, on the road to the recently opened border post with Botswana. This border crossing has only been open since mid 2002, and we currently recommend this only for the more adventurous traveller.
The lodge is accessible via a good dirt road accessible in a normal vehicle for most, if not all, of the year; however a 4x4 is required to explore the surrounding area of Bushmanland. The lodge is co-operating with the community run Nyae Nyae Conservancy, set up in 1998 to give the San (Bushman) people the right to benefit from the wildlife and tourist activities in the area.
While here, take the opportunity to visit the Ju/'hoan (Bushmen) community by joining a full day guided visit from the lodge. Here you will learn about their hunting skills, plants traditionally used and general life style. Shorter visits can be arranged if required. Alternatively you could join a Khaudum tour, which will spend at least one night camping in the Khaudum National Park. Although it is possible to visit Khaudum in your own vehicle, entry is only allowed when two or more vehicles are travelling together.
Another feature of the area are the many Baobab trees, some more than 2000 years old. Whichever activity you choose to join, you are guaranteed a special experience often missed by visitors to Namibia. Activities need to be booked in advance.

Tsumkwe Lodge is in Tsumkwe, in the north east of Namibia. To get to Tsumkwe, drive northwards from Grootfontein on the B8. After 55km, you will find the turn-off to Tsumkwe, the C44. This is a gravel road in good condition and you will enter Tsumkwe after about 225km and 3 hours. The road can be travelled with any kind of vehicle, but to explore the area, a 4x4 vehicle will be needed. At the moment, fuel is not available in Tsumkwe. There is a very good gravel airfield 5km outside Tsumkwe.
