Villa Oleandra

Omaruru | Namibia

Villa Oleandra, 'The Charming House' describes itself as a 'chic, self-catering Villa,' and is situated in the artistic and historic town of Omaruru, located 50km north of Karibib and 230km from Windhoek. It is a small, but grand self-catering establishment, beautifully decorated with contemporary art and high quality fittings and furniture. This exquisite Villa is aimed at an up-market clientèle, who are seeking privacy and luxury, as an alternative to the more traditional Namibian lodges or hotels. Although no meals are provided or can be ordered here, the owners and staff will recommended a nearby restaurant or bar.

Villa Oleandra is rented out as a single unit (to one party at a time) and is therefore for your exclusive use for the duration of your stay in Omaruru.

Omaruru is set in the heart of a game-farm area, surrounded by an array of mountains, the most prominent being the Oruwe, located southeast of the town and the Erongo Mountains to the south-west. It has become a modern day settlement for artistic individuals, including chocolatiers and eco friendly gift card makers, (made with recycled paper and shredded elephant dung!) Kristall Kellerei, only 1 of 2 winery's in the country, is also located in Omaruru. There are a number of (coffee) shops and antique stores within walking distance worth a visit.

The name Omaruru is derived from the Herero 'omaere omaruru' meaning 'bitter curd' as the cattle used to browse on a local bush that turned their milk bitter.

The Villa is set in a beautifully manicured garden. Many flowers of the same name decorate the outside area, which is shaded by huge jacaranda trees, an ideal place to relax, especially on the hammocks! The black pool is so named as it has black tiles sides, and there are a number of secluded seating areas provided to chill out on after a dip in the pool, or perhaps to read a book. The verandah is a perfect spot for a sundowner of night cap, and the subtle lighting certainly enhances the romantic feeling of the Villa.

Villa Oleandra has 2 double rooms. Each has it's own en-suite bathroom, television with DSTV channels, and a CD/DVD player. Check out the chandeliers, including the ones in the shower and separate toilet! There is a complimentary mini-bar (with a range of soft drinks, no alcohol), air-conditioning & heater, and a tea & coffee maker. The self-catering facilities include microwave, fridge, oven, associated cooking equipment, (top-notch pots and pans) and there is an outside braai area. There is a lounge area and office, complete with laptop. A complimentary bottle of wine will be waiting for each guest on arrival!

Omaruru is in an excellent location to explore the surrounding area including the dinosaur tracks at the Farm Otjihaenamaparero, (best not to try and ask your way there after a visit to the winery!) and the Paula Cave, set on a farm operated by Erongo Wilderness Lodge. If you are looking for a different mode of transport to show you round the local highlights, then try out the donkey cart trips, sponsored by the French Embassy!
