Introduction: The galjoen (Dichistius capensis) is a marine fish that is also known as black bream or blackfish. It is often found in sandy beaches and rocky outcrops along the coast, mainly in search of food. Galjoen keep mostly to shallow waters and are often found in rough surf and sometimes right next to the shore.
They are known to every angler and it is also the national fish of South Africa, probably because Galjoen are known to fishermen as game fighters. Their scales are very firmly attached and they have prominent, well-developed fins with prominent spines.
Distribution: It is found only along the coast of South Africa and Namibia.
Diet: It is partial to the white mussels, red bait and barnacles.
Colouring: Near rocks the colour of the Galjoen is almost completely black, while in sandy areas the colour is silver-bronze.
Size: Length up to 55 cm, weight up to 7 kg.
