Usakos Museum

Museums Namibia

Usakos was founded in the early 1900's as a locomotive watering station and workshop. Originally that land was owned by Herero Chief Samuel Maharero who sold some ground to Europeans. In turn they resold it to the Otavi Mining and Railway Company who operated an industrial railroad from Swakopmund to Tsumeb. In 1908 the very first building in Usakos became the railway station and together with a repair shop, were established until the 1960's.

On the downturn of the region's mining operations, the importance of Usakos as an industrial centre faded. Years later it became an office for the Town Council. In 2008 the railway station was declared a museum with the sole purpose to record, document and preserve the town's history.

The museum retells the growth from a productive refuelling and repair stopover into a small town. Relevant historical displays, pictures and artefacts are exhibited inside. Although Usakos is mainly a 'drive-through' town on the way to Swakopmund and the coast, a short visit to see how things were in days-gone-by will help break up that long journey.
