Otavi is a small agricultural town in northern Namibia, as well as being the name of a constituency of Otjozondjupa Province. It lies in a pleasant wooded and fertile plain, beneath the towering Otavi Mountains. It's name is derived from the Herero word 'ondavi' meaning 'branch of a tree.'
The towns of Otavi, Tsumeb and Grootfontein define an area known as the 'Otavi Triangle' also known as the Otavi Mountain land. These 3 towns that define the triangle are approximately 60km from each other, hence the name. This geographical region is also referred to as the 'Golden Triangle' or the 'Maize Triangle' owing to the cultivation of maize in the area. The district was in the past known for it's mineral wealth, but most of the deposits have been exhausted, although it still functions as a copper-mining and farming centre.
On July 1st 1915, the German Army was defeated at Otavi by South African troops and on July 9th they surrendered nearby and signed the Khorab Peace Treaty. (A common occurrence in Teutonic Southern African history apparently!) The Khorab Memorial (1920) is a testimony to this event, and can be found a few miles outside of Otavi.
Accommodation in the Otavi area is largely limited to lodges in the surrounding countryside. Otavi is often used as a refreshment stop when heading towards Etosha National Park. There are a few shops, bank, petrol stations in the town.
