Bushman's Candle
Plants of Namibia
The ganna or saltbush family (Salsola species) includes vegetables such as beetroot (Beta vulgaris) spinach (Spinacia spp.). The species are very similar and difficult to differentiate. It is a large and somewhat confusing species that occur throughout the drier parts of Namibia, but centre around the Luderitz area. Here, over 20 species are endemic to the region and the southern Namib Desert.
Many species are tolerant of saline pans, marine estuaries, salt marshes and other geographical locations that they can adapt to dry conditions. This species tend to be well-grazed, particularly its flowers and berries, whilst the Salsola tuberculata is toxic to livestock if overeaten.
