The Omaruru River

Rivers of Namibia

Just north of Henties Bay, the ephemeral Omaruru River reaches the sea, usually only with subsurface water. A golf course lies on the old riverbed, where the first holidaymakers had their homes, close to the source of fresh water. The Omdel Aquifer, about 40km inland of the Omaruru, provides water to all these communities and to Swakopmund.

The pleasant town of Omarura was built on the banks of this river, and its name means bitter, thick milk in Herero and refers to the milk produced by cattle which have grazed on the bitterbush. (Pechuelloeschae leubnitziae.)
