The Uniab River
Rivers of Namibia
The Uniab, an ephemeral river, is perhaps best-known as desert-adapted elephant country. Black rhino, giraffe, Hartmann's mountain zebra, oryx, springbok and kudu, also visit the Uniab riverbed. There is also a large predator presence in and around the river, including lion, cheetah, leopard, brown and spotted hyena. Birdlife is prolific, with most of Namibia's endemics present.
Rhino tracking is a specialty of Desert Rhino Camp, a mobile camp run in conjunction with the 'Save the Rhino Trust'. This exciting and popular activity starts early in the morning, and generally you will be driven to within 1km of the rhino, before approaching on foot, close enough to get a great view, but not so close as to disturb the animals.
Another way to view the Uniab River is from the air on a the Skeleton Coast (Uniab River Flight).
