Sossusvlei Express Safari

Includes: Sossusvlei - Namibia

The Sossusvlei Express Safari is 3 day safari to Sossusvlei, one of Namibia's most visited tourist attractions. The accommodation is in a luxury (pre-erected) tented camp. This tour is designed for those on a restricted time limit, but who still desire to pack in the country's main attractions, but in a shorter space of time. The tour leaves from Windhoek south towards the town of Rehoboth, an area of high elevation and sparse rainfall, before heading into the Naukluft, a beautiful, mountainous area, with numerous springs and small streams.

The base for the tour and subsequently the accommodation, is close to the Sesriem gate, in permanent adobe style tents with en-suite facilities. This prime location has the added advantage of maximizing sightseeing time, against that of travelling time. The trip to the dunes and back, offers stunning mountains and desert views and this is an excellent way to experience the amazing sand dune sea of the Namib and Sossusvlei region. There's a lot more to see and explore here than meets the eye in this unique area, and many miss the Nara plants. They have no leaves and bear a round, spiky fruit once a year, that can grow the size of a grapefruit.

Time permitting, it is recommended to combine this safari with either the Etosha Express Safari or the Etosha Tour, although it can be easily combined with any north bound safari.

Day 1: Windhoek - Sesriem
Guests will be collected from their accommodation in Windhoek at 11h15 (summer time) and 10h15 (winter time). Driving via Rehoboth and Naukluft, arrival time at the camp is around mid-afternoon. This still leaves plenty of time to chill and enjoy the views of the surrounding area, before taking a short hike to a nearby kopjie (hill), to marvel at the sun setting over the Namib Desert. An early night is recommended, and the twin share permanent tents, with en-suite facilities and private deck, provide suitable sleeping quarters. The swimming pool and bar are ideal sites to relax and unwind after a day's drive.

Day 2: Sossusvlei
A short drive of only 3kms takes the group to the Sesriem park gate. The dawn departure from camp ensures the tour arrives in time to enjoy the early morning light on the dunes. Then it's down an ancient river bed, (for about 55kms) surrounded by those famous towering dunes, to the 2x4 parking area. Time to hop off one bus and on to another, the 4x4 shuttle into the Sossusvlei area. The early morning light and the peace and tranquility of the region, make the early start all the more worthwhile. Then it's off to Dead Vlei, with its large expanse of bleached cracked-clay and skeletal camel thorn trees, contrasting with the backdrop of huge dunes and ever-changing colours. Return transport is either by foot or back on the shuttle, stopping (and climbing if desired) the famous Dune 45, before returning to Sesriem and a visit to the nearby Sesriem Canyon, one of the few permanent water sources in the area. The tour arrives back at the camp in the late afternoon, in time to watch the sunset over the sensational desert.
