This tour is a good way to see one of Namibia's most spectacular sights: the towering sand dunes at Sossusvlei in the Namib Desert. These dunes are some of the tallest in the world and one of the most spectacular sights in Namibia.
This tour departs from Swakopmund and returns to Windhoek, other alternatives to this Namib Desert Tour are the Sossusvlei Safari and the Namib Desert and Swakopmund Tour.
NB - This safari ceases to run from 1 November 2005. We can still custom make departures for groups of 4 people or more

Sesriem |
This tour to the Namib Desert starts when you are collected from your accommodation in Swakopmund between 08h00 and 08h30 in the morning. We drive south along the coast for 35 km to the port town of Walvis Bay. South of the town there is a large marine lagoon which is home to a vast array of marine bird life, in particular flamingoes. The tour will make a short visit to the lagoon to see the birds and a short visit to Walvis Bay to collect any last minute supplies before heading out into the Namib Desert. The first part of our tour today takes us across more of the seemingly endless Namib gravel plains. Then the landscape suddenly changes and we are into the mountain desert. We traverse both the Kuiseb and Gaub passes, driving both times to the river beds at the bottom of the canyons and then climbing the long steep road to the top and the spectacular panoramas the mountains give us. Again the scenery changes as we make our way down to the dune fields at Sesriem, in the Namib Desert. We cross some open grass and farm lands before the terrain begins to give way to the immense red sand dune desert of the Namib. The tour stops for lunch in the desert en-route and arrive in Sesriem campsite in the late afternoon and have time to relax and watch the sunset over the dunes from our campsite. (Lunch, Dinner) |

Sesriem |
A pre-dawn start this morning as the tour heads into the Namib Desert to see the sunrise in the dunes. From our campsite we drive a further 60 km into the desert and have our breakfast as the colours change and grow across the landscape. To reach Sossusvlei itself we must then walk for the last five km through the dunes. The walk is like nothing else. In the cool of the morning with soft sunlight just beginning to play over the dunes and creating a sharp light and shadow contrast across the whole desert. The ancient mineral pans, stunted Camelthorn trees and the chance of seeing a gemsbok or maybe an ostrich make the photo opportunities perfect.
We spend the morning in and around Sossusvlei before returning to our vehicle, you have the option of paying a small charge for one of the 4WD taxis to take you back to the vehicle instead of making the return 5 km walk. Then its back to our camp for lunch and to escape the heat of the day. Relaxing in the shade and eating ice cream beside the swimming pool, or having a siesta, or both. As the day cools off in the late afternoon we will take a short tour to the Sesriem Canyon. (B, L, D) |

Windhoek |
This morning we have a fairly leisurely start to our last day. After breakfast the tour begins its journey, along scenic roads, leading out of the Namib Desert back to Windhoek. We will stop for our last lunch en-route and will re-join the sealed road at Rehoboth, about 100 km south of Windhoek. The Namib Desert Tour ends when we arrive back in Windhoek at around 15h00 and you will be dropped off at your accommodation on our return. (B, L) |
