Kalahari Bushman Cultural Safari

Includes: Kalahari & Bushmen Visits

The Kalahari Bushman Exclusive is a 3 day / 2 night tented cultural safari, to a farm owned and operated by a local farmer in the eastern Kalahari region of Namibia. Accommodation is in a tented bush camp. This is the perfect tour to learn of the culture of the local Bushman people, and it aims to provide a hands on experience through several activities, a variety of talks, explanations and demonstrations, before before being offered the opportunity of 'trying out' some of the skills yourself. (Under the supervision of expert local instructors.)

  • The term Bushman is best-known referring to nomadic hunter-gathering people of the Kalahari Desert.
  • They are called 'San' in Namibia and that word means 'foragers.'
  • The Bushmen are proud of their origin and the knowledge they have of 'living in the bush veld.'
  • This cultural safari goes along way to explaining some specific cultural and linguistic characteristics, as well as delving into their often mis-understood history.

Day 1: Windhoek -Kalahari Desert
Guests will be collected from you accommodation in Windhoek at around 09h00 and will head eastwards on a drive straight to the bush-based camp in the Kalahari Desert. This is via the small town of Witvlei and the overnight destination is near the Buitepos border post with Botswana. On arrival visitors will 'meet and greet' the host family on the main local farm, (and visitors are welcomed very much) before proceeding to the campsite, for a further meeting with the guides. Tents will be erected, followed by a short refreshment break.
As the campsite is in a wilderness environment, an opportunity to take a late afternoon walk to investigate the surrounding area is not to be missed. The guides are only too willing to answer your questions, and during the excursion you will be introduced to the traditional lifestyle of the San, who roamed the Kalahari Desert for many years. Throughout the 3 day visit, traditionally dressed Bushmen will relay some of the legends and myths of their culture, in the form of poetry, songs, dances and maybe through a few traditional games as well.
Return to the camp is as the sun sets, just in time for a sundowner, and a dinner cooked over an open-fire. The tranquility of the remote wilderness environment can be experienced to the full as darkness falls, and after supper it's time for a spot of stargazing, and an exchange of stories with your hosts.

Day 2: Kalahari Desert
The dawn wake-up call is accompanied by hot coffee before venturing out into the bush. The duration of these walks are open-ended, weather and energy levels permitting! The emphasis during this outing is on bush experience, and trackers will take you on foot into the veld to show their ways and means of survival. The medicinal and nutritional use of plants and the interpreting of animal tracks, will be demonstrated by the real experts of the region. This is a hunter-gatherer way of life, collecting food, starting (controlled) fires with sticks, using the wind direction to assist in animal tracking, and how to find water from underground roots. In fact, everything necessary for survival, can be found in this wilderness. The game tends to concentrate on the farm, but the sharp eyes of the San-Bushmen, are always on the look-out for other species.
There are several special Bushman techniques being taught today. Rope will be made using natural fibres, followed by attempts to try out several trapping methods. Ever made a bow and arrow since you were a child? Well now is the chance again, but this time how to make and use it properly. Your guide will also search for a specific species of beetle, used to make the potent hunting poison. Instruction on making ostrich egg pearls and jewelery in the old Bushmen tradition, is also demonstrated.
The guides will demonstrate their survival and hunting skills, and visitors are allowed to hunt with their cameras! It's role reversal on the return journey, as it's the visitors turn to lead the Bushmen back to the camp. GPS's are out, so it is advisable to pay attention to the paths and trees passed on the way in. The route is through a typical Kalahari landscape, characterized by wide vistas of bush that is scattered with clumps of trees. The day ends with dinner prepared on an open campfire.

Day 3: Windhoek
An early morning bush breakfast precedes the dawn breaking of camp, with a drive down to the main farm. There is now an opportunity to experience a part of farm life, based on their day-to-day activities including; milking the cows, making cream and witnessing how the farm workers are employed. Another chance to meet the locals follows, some of them whilst they are working on the farm, and then visiting their homesteads to see 'how others live.'. It's then time to say farewell to your hosts on the farm before departing back to Windhoek. There is a scheduled stop in Gobabis for some light refreshments, (on own account) and arrival in the capital city is some time in the afternoon.
