Damara Turn

6 Day Camping Safari in Damarland

This safari departs from Windhoek and visits the Ugab River, Brandberg Massif, Salt River Gorge, Huab River Wetlands and Twyfelfontein, always on the look out for the Desert Elephant and Desert Rhino, before entering the central Damaraland hinterlands, returning via Spitzkoppe and Khomas Hochland.

Day Route/Activities
1 We head out north-west via Okahandja, Omaruru and Uis into the Pro-Namib, to the Ugab River Basecap, situated in a gorge beneath the shoulder of the Brandberg Massif.

2 In the morning we'll try to find some Desert Elephants and Black Rhino, before ascedning the rocky Salt River Gorge. We'll make a turn by the waterhole and prehistoric ruins at Gai-As, and then continue north to the lush Huab River Wetlands - an excellent venue for bird and wildlife watching.

3 We journey up the Huab and Aba-Huab riverbeds, to the Aba-Huab Campsite, possibly encountering Elephant, Rhino and other wildlife on the way. In the later aafternoon, we'll swing by Twyfelfontein, and explore the ancient rock engravings and stone age dwellings of Namibias first inhabitants.

4 We turn south into the central Damarland hinterlands, crossing the varied terrain of this part of the Pro-Namib Plateau. We pass close to the Doros Crater - the remains of an ancient collapsed volcano, and descend eventually into the Ugab River valley, aiming for the Ugab Wilderness Camp - another excellent opportunity for elephant encounters.

5 We move on south, heading via Uis and the Namib Gravel Plains towaards the magical Spitzzkoppe, a lonely and magnificent inselberg. We'll have some time for exploring this beautiful place on foot, befire settling down to camp amongst the ancient stones.

6 Today we make our way back home via the northern Khomas Hochland and the upper reaches of the Swakop River - an area of wonderful scenic beauty and abundant wildlife.
