The safari starts travelling from Swakopmund along the Atlantic Coastline (Skeleton Coast), view the Welwitschia fields and enter the unspoilt narrow canyons of the Ugab River. There is a good chance of sighting the desert elephant and black rhino along the Huab riverbanks and the Palmwag concession area. Spend two nights in comfortable bungalows at the rustic Palmwag Lodge in Damaraland. Participate in day excursions to Sesfontein and the surrounding area. On your last evening at Palmwag Lodge, allow yourself to be spoilt once again before your early morning departure takes you back to Swakopmund via Twyfelfontein to visit the rock engravings and the Burnt Mountain.

Route/Activities |
|
Day 1
Ugab River |
Departing from Swakopmund this safari heads along the Atlantic Coast towards the North. Visit the lichen fields near Wlotzka’s Baken before continuing to Henties Bay, a small holiday resort. Onwards to the seal colony at Cape Cross. After visiting the seals, the journey continues towards the Brandberg. We visit the Welwitschia plains in the vicinity of the Ugab River. We encounter game species, e.g. oryx, springbok, kudu, ostrich - and with some luck we might sight desert elephant. Meals: Lunch & Dinner Camping: Bushcamp in the Ugab River |
|
Day 2
Huab River |
In the morning the safari continues through this mineral rich area, along old prospectors’ trails, past old mines and abandoned farms. When you look back, the Brandberg now resembles a toy mountain. The trail traverses endless plains, which change into huge oceans of grass after heavy rainfalls, through red sand dunes, and eventually leads to the ancient Doros Crater. Here the lucky guest might be lucky enough to sight some of the endangered Black Rhino on the eternal search for good grazing or quietly resting in the shade of a huge acacia tree. It is astonishing how these animals can survive in such an isolated area with little or no water. Suddenly a Petrified Forest materialises out of the depths of an age old eroded gorge. Still almost complete, these massive tree trunks, now petrified poles, merge into a rock wall. Every detail is recognisable. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Camping: Bushcamp is erected in a wind-sheltered gorge close to the Huab River. |

Day 3
Palmwag Concession Area |
In the early morning the drive continues into the Huab River Valley. The morning sun effectively enhances the splendour of this part of Namibia. The Riverbed is surrounded by high mountains and gorges. The journey continues in the riverbed and often-inquisitive oryx, springbok, zebra and ostrich accompany the tour group. A surprise lurks around every corner - one landscape being more beautiful than the next. The trail ends at the Torra Bay - Khorixas road junction. This road also forms the southern border of the approximately 5000 square kilometre Concession Area of Palmwag Lodge, the destination for the day. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Camping: Camping in the Palmwag Concession Area |

Day 4
Palmwag Lodge |
Depart and continue in the direction of Palmwag Lodge. A multitude of savannah game such as zebra, ostrich, kudu, oryx, springbok, jackal, hyena, giraffe and often the desert elephant and black rhino can be sighted here. From the behaviour of the wildlife it is immediately noticeable that here hunting is prohibited. The game is peaceful and remains not bothered by the new visitors. The absence of humans, roads and civilisation, allows for optimal game and bird watching.
Arrival at Palmwag Lodge in the late afternoon. The evening is crowned with an unforgettable sunset, refreshing drink, delicious food and a cosy atmosphere. |
|
Day 5
Palmwag Lodge |
After breakfast a day tour to Sesfontein and surroundings. Visit one of the six springs at the mountain slopes of Sesfontein (hence the name “Sesfontein”), a one-time German fort which has been restored and today functions as a lodge. The old military cemetery with its lonely graves conjures up memories of the German colonial period. Alleviate the midday heat in a natural “pool” of the Ongongo Waterfall near Warmquelle, where the crystal clear water of the pool is inviting and refreshing. An ideal venue for lunch. The return trip leads through the Khowarib Gorge - a fairytale gorge through which the Hoanib River has laboriously wound its way. |
|
Day 6
Swakopmund |
Early departure to Twyfelfontein to visit the rock engravings. Thereafter we continue via the “Burnt Mountain” to Uis, a deserted mining town. As you pass the highest mountain of Namibia, the ± 2800 metre high Brandberg, it appears almost surreal. The safari returns to Swakopmund in the late afternoon.
