Day 1
Hoarusib River |
The safari departs in the morning from Palmwag Lodge via Khowarib, Sesfontein Pass in a northerly direction in the region of Opuwo, the centre of Kaokoland. The trail continues through an Ovahimba inhabited area.
Overnight camp is erected on the banks of the Hoarusib River at an open water hole. |
|
Day 2
Orupembe |
After a short morning walk along the Hoarusib River, the safari continues along the river further into Kaokoland. Time and again one meets Ovahimba families and the guest will have, if not today, the opportunity to explore an Ovahimba village as well as a traditional hut. The guest learns about the old customs and way of life of this nomadic tribe. The Ovahimba gratefully accept sugar, confectionery, tobacco and other trinkets as gifts.
Overnight open camp in the region of Orupembe, a large Ovahimba settlement. |

Day 3
Hoarusib River Valley |
Today’s safari continues in a southerly direction to the Khumib River in Kaokoland. The vegetation grows sparse - large grass plains and savannah game adorns this region. In the afternoon we cross a highland and can relish another enchanting view of the Hoarusib River. Ovahimba can often be encountered in the shade of the palm trees. Life is easier alongside the waters of the Hoarusib River where livestock (cattle, goats and sheep) have better opportunities to survive. The desert elephant often visit the Hoarusib River Valley and one has ample opportunity to watch these animals in close proximity. Overnight at a communal camping site. |
|
Day 4
Hoanib River |
We gradually leave the region of the Ovahimba. Our destination is the Hoanib River with its abundant, absolutely undisturbed game - amongst others the desert elephant. The Hoanib River Valley is the northern border of the approximately 5000 square kilometre Concession Area of Palmwag Lodge. Short game drive into the valley with optimal wildlife encounters.
Sighting the desert elephant is an absolute highlight of the day. Overnight camp in one of the branches of the Hoanib River. |

Day 5
Palmwag Lodge |
We embark on the return journey through the Hoanib riverbed and the guest has another opportunity to sight numerous savannah game as well as the desert elephant at close proximity. The safari contines onwards to Fort Sesfontein and its surroundings. Visit one of the 6 springs at the mountain slopes of Sesfontein (hence the name “Sesfontein”) and a one-time German fort which has been restored and today functions as a lodge. The old military cemetery with its lonely graves conjures up memories of the German Colonial period. Alleviate the midday heat in a natural “pool” of the Ongongo Waterfall near Warmquelle, an ideal venue for lunch! The return trip leads through the Khowarib Gorge - a fairytale gorge through which the Hoanib River has laboriously wound its way. After a short rest, the safari ends at Palmwag Lodge. |
