The primary motive for this safari is to track the Desert Elephant and Rhino which live in the Damaraland region of Namibia. On this safari we will also head north into the Kaokoland area of Namibia where we will encounter the nomadic Himba tribe of the area. This safari really gets of the beaten track and many of the days are spent in remote areas, using dry river beds as roads. The facilities on this safari are often fairly basic, and it will only appeal to the more adventurous traveller.
Many of the places mentioned are so remote they will not be found on the average map or mentioned in a guide-book, so for the adventurous trail blazer this is an ideal safari.

Route/Activities |
|
Day 1
Damaraland |
Your guide picks you up at your accommodation in Windhoek. We travel north via Vingerklip, a fascinating stone protrusion, to the Petrified Forest where ancient trees are cast in rock. Tonight we stay at the rustic Aba-!Huab, where we might be visited by desert elephants which often visit the camp in search of water. |
|
Day 2
Damaraland |
In the early morning we view a spectacular collection of Bushman art at Twyfelfontein, and the volcanic phenomenon called the Organ Pipes. The natural oasis at Palmwag is our overnight spot. From Palmwag we will head out in the 4x4 vehicle through the concession area in search of the desert Elephant & Rhino which roam wild in the area. We will spend much of the day driving down the dry riverbeds in search of these majestic creatures |
|
Day 3
Khowarib |
We continue into legendary Kaokoland through the rugged Aub canyon and the mountainous Barab valley, which both offer excellent bird watching opportunities. Once again the day will be spent off the beaten track as we traverse dry river beds and small tracks. We conclude our day at the community-run Khowarib camp. |
|
Day 4
Ganamub |
First stop is the refreshing pool at Ongongo, thereafter we visit an old German fort at Sesfontein. We proceed to the Hoanib river, which is dry for most of the year and supports large herds of oryx, ostrich and other game. Our camp is Ganamub, a good setting to spot desert elephant. |
|
Day 5
Puros |
We travel through Amspoort, set in characteristic mountainous and rocky terrain, to our destination Puros. An arid area, Puros features beautiful sand dunes, Camelthorn and other acacia tree species. We will encounter our first Himba settlements in this area, and will stop at one of the villages to meet with the local community and learn about their lifestyle. |
|
Day 6
Puros |
Based at Puros, we explore our immediate surroundings. Nearby Hoarusib river is a well-known haunt for elephant and other indigenous species. Awesome rock formations which resemble sand castles provide ample opportunity for photography. |
|
Day 7
Warmquelle |
Starting our return, it is another day of stunning Kaokoland & Damaraland scenery. We reflect on our travels as we spend the night around the sun-warmed pools at Warmquelle. |
|
Day 8
|
It is a long drive back to Windhoek so we take our time returning to Windhoek, stopping for scenic and other interesting features on the way. You are returned to your accommodation and the adventure unfortunately ends. |
