Kaokoland Explorer (option 1)

10 Days in Kaokoland the home of the Himba

On this safari we will head north into the Kaokoland area of Namibia where we will encounter the nomadic Himba tribe of the area. This safari really gets of the beaten track and many of the days are spent in remote areas, using dry river beds as roads. The facilities on this safari are often fairly basic, and it will only appeal to the more adventurous traveller.

Many of the places mentioned are so remote they will not be found on the average map or mentioned in a guide-book, so for the adventurous trail blazer this is an ideal safari.

Day
Route/Activities
Day 1
Damaraland
Your guide picks you up at your accommodation in Windhoek. We travel north via Vingerklip, a fascinating stone protrusion, to the Petrified Forest where ancient trees are cast in rock. Tonight we stay at the rustic Aba-!Huab, where we might be visited by desert elephants.

Day 2
Palmwag
In the early morning we view a spectacular collection of Bushman art at Twyfelfontein, and the volcanic phenomenon called the Organ Pipes. The natural oasis at Palmwag is our overnight spot.

Day 3
Khowarib
We continue into legendary Kaokoland through the rugged Aub canyon and the mountainous Barab valley, which both offer excellent bird watching opportunities. We conclude our day at the community-run Khowarib camp.

Day 4
Amspoort
First stop is the old German fort at Sesfontein, thereafter we continue into the Hoanib. This sandy river supports large herds of game, notably oryx, ostrich and springbok. We overnight at Amspoort, a rocky landscape in mountainous surroundings.

Day 5
Puros
Through the changing scenery of Leyland's Drift we make our way to the Hoarusib river, a popular haunt of the desert elephant. At arid Puros, featuring beautiful sand dunes, we halt for the night amongst the camelthorn and other acacia trees.

Day 6
Onjuwa Plains
A narrow, sandy river, the Kumib allows us passage to Orupembe. A popular stop, this village provides a chance to fill up on water. Onwards we travel to relish the afternoon splendour of the Onjuwa Plains, where we overnight.

Day 7
Epupa Falls
Exploring more of the savanna-like features of the Onjuwa plains, we make our way to Etengwe. We meet the Himba, a tribe that still, defiantly, clings to a traditional existence. Later today we will head north to the beautiful Epupa Falls on the border between Angola and Namibia.

Day 8
Epupa Falls
Epupa Falls, is the largest waterfall in Namibia and situated on the Kunene River in a ruggedly beautiful area that borders Angola. We camp out under towering Makalani palms and the background orchestra of the falls lulls us to sleep.

Day 9
Otjitotongwe
Leaving the harsh beauty of Kaokoland, we make our way into Damaraland to spend our last night amongst the typical plants and rocky hills of this area. Our hosts operate a cheetah farm where we are assured close contact with these graceful cats.

Day 10
Taking leave from our feline companions, we slowly make our way back to Windhoek.
