Classic South Scenic Flight
Includes: Sossusvlei & Luderitz
The Classic South scenic flight takes off and lands in the Atlantic coastal town of Swakopmund airport. This day adventure begins in the early morning, and includes:
- A stopover and tour of Luderitz.
- A guided tour of the ghost town of Kolmanskop.
Your flight initially heads in a south-easterly direction to the Kuiseb riverbed and on to Sossusvlei, a clay pan with the highest shifting sand dunes in the world. No part of the desert is visually more stunning than Sossusvlei, especially from the air. The warm tints of the sand, range from pale apricot to brick orange and deep red, vividly contrasting with the large white clay pans at some of their bases.
The flight continues over the diamond restricted area in Sperrgebiet National Park, Namibia's newest national park, then turning towards the coast. It's over the southern extremities of the park next, before flying over the 55m tall Bogenfels Rock Arch, jutting spectacularly into the Atlantic Ocean. From the Bogenfels it's on passed Black Point, Pomona and Albatross Island, landing at Lüderitz.
Kolmanskop is a few kilometers inland from Lüderitz, and this ghost town was once:
- The focal point of a glittering diamond rush, developed after the discovery of diamonds in the area in 1908,
- The village was built like a German town, including a hospital, power station, school and theatre.
- Now they have all but been demolished by the wind. Visitors can now walk through houses knee-deep in sand!
- Delicatessens, coffee shops and Lutheran churches.
- This Atlantic town is home to seals, penguins and other marine life.
- This part of the tour is rounded off perfectly with a picnic lunch at the yacht club.
- The shipwreck Otavi (1945) at Spencer Bay.
- Meob Bay.
- Conception Bay, where the shipwreck Eduard Bohlen,(1909) lies approximately 250m inland
- The Shaunee, another shipwreck further along the coast. (1976)
This flight is an amazing experience, with the timelessness and beauty of the Namib on one side, and the silence and solitude contrasting with the turbulence of the Atlantic surf, on the other. The flight passes Sandwich Harbour, a wetland of international importance and protected by the RAMSAR Convention. In harmony with the surroundings, you find Namibia's coastal salt mines, south of Walvis Bay, attracting thousands of birds. The next destination is Walvis Bay, Namibia's major harbour town, and a former enclave to South Africa. Midway between Walvis Bay and Swakopmund, look out for the Langstrand Holiday Resort and the Dolphin Park Recreation Resort, before landing in Swakopmund, where the Classic South flight, comes to an end.
