Himba Day Trip
Includes: Scenic Flight - Namibia
The Himba Day Trip takes off and lands from the Atlantic coastal town of Swakopmund and the early morning low-level scenic flight passes the Brandberg Mountain, over Damaraland and Kaokoland before landing at Epupa Falls. You will then be accompanied by a guide and translator, and driven to an Ovahimba village, spending the morning with the Ovahimba in their 'kraal'.
The Ovahimba are:
- A tribe of semi-nomadic pastoralists who still live and dress according to ancient traditions.
- They are tall, slender and statuesque people, characterized by their proud yet friendly bearing.
- The women are noted for their unusual sculptural beauty, enhanced by intricate hairstyles and traditional adornments.
- The Ovahimba rub their bodies with red ochre and fat to protect their skin against the scorching sun.
Lunch will be served at Ohakane Lodge in Opuwo. In the afternoon the flight follows the Uniab River bed in search for the desert-adapted elephants, black rhino's, giraffe, Hartmann's Mountain zebra and game that inhabit the river mouth area, before turning southbound. The flight follows the treacherous Skeleton Coast, with it's pristine nature and untouched landscapes. The Skeleton Coast Park:
- Is about 40km wide and covers some 16,845km².
- Stretches from the Ugab River to the Kunene River in the south, to the Kunene River, (which forms the northern border with Angola) and protects about one third of Namibia's coastline.
- This region is generally cold and windy, with mist in the mornings and evenings.
- It is littered with whalebones, shipwrecks and the remains of sailors and explorers.
Further flights pass Torra Bay, Palgrave point, and Toscanini to the Cape Cross Seal Reserve. During the November & December breeding season as many as 200,000 seals gather at Cape Cross. It was here that the celebrated Portuguese navigator, Diego Cao, erected a 'padrao' or a stone cross in 1486. The flight continues coastwise from Cape Cross passing Henties Bay and the saltworks north of Swakopmund, before landing. The Epupa Falls and Ovahimba Day Flight has come to a close.
