Skeleton Coast & Damaraland Flight
Includes: Scenic Flight - Namibia
The Skeleton Coast and Damaraland Flight takes off and lands from the Swakopmund airfield.
First it's over to Hobatere Lodge, via the Brandberg Mountain and Damaraland. Hobatere derives it's name from the Damara language meaning 'find me'. The lodge is:
- Situated on 32,000ha of wildlife concession area, approximately 80km north of Kamanjab on the western edge of the Etosha National Park.
- Home to a wide variety of Namibian game species and you will enjoy a guided game drive where elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah, giraffe, eland and zebra can be found.
- Its environment and game densities are similar to Etosha.
- After the game drive you will return to the lodge, where a light lunch will be served.
The return afternoon low-level flight, passes Damaraland table top mountains to Palmwag. The flight follows the Uniab River bed in search for the desert-adapted elephants, black rhino's, giraffe, Hartmann's Mountain zebra and game that inhabit the river mouth area, before turning southbound. The flight follows the treacherous Skeleton Coast, with it's pristine nature and untouched landscapes. The Skeleton Coast Park:
- Is about 40km wide and covers some 16,845km².
- Stretches from the Ugab River to the Kunene River in the south, to the Kunene River, (which forms the northern border with Angola) and protects about one third of Namibia's coastline.
- This region is generally cold and windy, with mist in the mornings and evenings.
- Is littered with whalebones, shipwrecks and the remains of sailors and explorers.
Further flights pass Torra Bay, Palgrave point, and Toscanini to the Cape Cross Seal Reserve. During the November/December breeding season as many as 200, 000 seals gather at Cape Cross. It was here that the celebrated Portuguese navigator, Diego Cao, erected a 'padrao' or a stone cross in 1486. The flight continues coastwise from Cape Cross passing Henties Bay and the saltworks north of Swakopmund, before landing as the Skeleton Coast and Damaraland Flight draws to a close.
