Ultimate South Flight

Includes: Scenic Flight & Luderitz Stopover - Namibia

This particular Ultimate South Flight has a stop over in the town of Luderitz, and your early morning flight takes off and lands at the Atlantic coastal town of Swakopmund. It first flies over the Kuiseb River, on the way to Sossusvlei, with the highest shifting sand dunes in the world. From Sossusvlei the flight heads over the 2,000m high dolomitic Naukluft Mountains, passing the extinct Brukaros Volcano to Keetmanshoop to refuel. From Keetmanshoop, there is an exciting low-level flight over the Fish River Canyon, up to Ai Ais. (Zigg-zagging over the canyon along the way.) The journey continues our over the Diamond Restricted Area, directly to Lüderitz Bucht and a tour to Kolmanskop, a few kilometers inland from Lüderitz. This ghost town was once:

  • The focal point of a glittering diamond rush, developed after the discovery of diamonds in the area in 1908,
  • The village was built like a German town, including a hospital, power station, school and theatre.
  • Now they have all but been demolished by the wind. Visitors can now walk through houses knee-deep in sand!

The return to Lüderitz signals the start of a city tour, a surreal, colonial relic, with everything one would expect from a German town including:

  • Delicatessens, coffee shops and Lutheran churches.
  • This Atlantic town is home to seals, penguins and other marine life.
  • This part of the tour is rounded off perfectly with a picnic lunch at the yacht club.

After a transfer to the airfield, the voyage continues along the 'Forbidden Coast,' passing:

  • The shipwreck Otavi (1945) at Spencer Bay.
  • Meob Bay.
  • Conception Bay, where the shipwreck Eduard Bohlen,(1909) lies approximately 250m inland
  • The Shaunee, further along the coast. (1976)

Further into the flight, and following the coastline, with the Atlantic surf on the one side, and the 'long wall' (Namib Dunes) on the other, before reaching Sandwich Harbour, a wetland of international importance and protected by the RAMSAR Convention. The highest recorded density of lesser and greater flamingo's was recorded at low tide with 7,791 birds/km.

In harmony with the surroundings you find:

  • Namibia's coastal salt mines, south of Walvis Bay, attracting thousands of birds.
  • Walvis Bay, Namibia's major harbour town and a former enclave to South Africa, which was incorporated into Namibia on March 1, 1994 is our next destination.
  • Midway between Walvis Bay and Swakopmund we pass the Langstrand Holiday Resort and the Dolphin Park Recreation Resort before landing at Swakopmund airfield.
