General Information:
Conceived and built by Namibia's leading engineers and designers, Desert Express has been winding through beautiful Namibia since 03 April 1998, when it was officially launched by the President of Namibia, Dr Sam Nujoma.
Reflecting unique colours and textures, this train was unmistakeably born in Africa. Burnt amber upholstery, rich golden-red woods and animal motifs are just a few ways to tastefully echo the landscape through which you travel.
In November 1994, TransNamib Rail Transport commenced a project whereby old passenger coaches were reconstructed and upgraded into more comfortable coaches. The project was undertaken by the staff of TransNamib's rail workshop in Windhoek, with the first of these "Starline" coaches being commissionedon 13 July 1995. These coaches are, however, used for regular train services. The board of TransNamib approved the proposal for a luxury tourist train in 1995. Here it was also decided that the train was to be called "Desert Express". The work was carried out in TransNamib Rail's Windhoek workshop.
Desert Express differs from other tourist trains in that it is highly modern, featuring all the conveniences and luxury a traveller could ask for, while maintaining friendly Namibian hospitality and excellent service. Other trains that run in the Southern African region are generally "antique trains" that have been refurbished.
