Guided Brandberg Hike

Includes: Brandberg - Namibia

The Brandberg Ascent is a guided 5 day camping hike up the Brandberg Mountain. It includes transfers to and from Windhoek to the mountain, and the services of a qualified guide. Brandberg Mountain is located in Damaraland, in the north-western Namib Desert near the coast. The highest point, the Königstein (German for 'King's Stone'), stands at 2573m above sea level on the flat Namib gravel plains. The plains have an elevation of about 600m, so the Brandberg is a 2km high pile of rock, (which you are now going to climb.) On a clear day 'The Brandberg' can be seen from a great distance.

There are various routes to the summit, the easiest (and also the steepest) being up the Ga'aseb River Valley, but other routes include the Hungurob and Tsisab River Valleys. The nearest settlement is Uis, an old mining town, situated roughly 30km from the mountain.

The name Brandberg is Afrikaans and German for 'Fire Mountain,' which comes from its glowing colour, which can sometimes be seen in the setting sun. The Damara name for the mountain is Dâures, which means 'burning mountain', while the Herero name, 'Omukuruvaro' means 'mountain of the Gods'.

  • The trails are not difficult, but challenging.
  • A decent level of fitness is essential as the trails can entail 7-8 hours walking.
  • You have to carry your luggage every day, including food and water (all together approximately 12–15 kg per person).
  • Although the hike is possible all year round, it is recommended to climb in the cooler winter months of April to September.

Day 2: Brandberg
Todays ascent up the mountain will take about 6-8 hours, to the 'Wasserfallflache,' some 1950m above sea level. A shady spot will be selected for a well-deserved lunch! In the afternoon the terrain gets even steeper and some big boulders and granite rock plates will have to be surmounted, the remaining 500m expected to take around 3hrs. The overwhelming view makes all the effort worthwhile. A base camp will be established for the Königstein ascent tomorrow. Walking time: 6 - 8 hrs. 1300m ascent, 100m descent.
