Self Driving in Namibia

An accommodated self drive itinerary that visits Kaokoland in Namibia

This itinerary is designed as an extension to our 16 Day Namibian Accommodated seld-drive itinerary, but it could be easily changed to stand alone. You will visit the highlights of Kaokoland, including the Epupa Falls.

Day
Route/Activities
Day 1
Etosha/ Damaraland/ Kaokoland
Since it is worth arriving in time to partake in some of the activities on offer at either Kavita Lion Lodge or Hobatere, suggest leaving Etosha soon after breakfast. Travel to Kamanjab and then take the C35 till you reach the appropriate turn off. Both lodges offer a more relaxed atmosphere in which to enjoy the wildlife and scenery of this area, with both game drives and bush walks available to guests. Kavita also offer trips to Himba villages, whereas the nocturnal game drive at Hobetere is very worthwhile. Accommodation at Kavita Lion Lodge or Hobatere lodge

Day 2 & 3
Epupa
Depending on road conditions, today maybe a long drive of between 6-8 hours. As you do not want to be driving on these gravel roads after dark suggest another reasonably early start. Follow the C35 till you reach the C41 turn off to Opuwo. Once in Opuwo you can follow the lesser gravel roads to Epupa Falls. This is a stunning area of natural beauty where the Kunene river spreads into a series of cascades and rock pools, the main drop being around 35metres. Here you can wash away the dust of your long drive, hike along the river or spend time with the local Himba communities. Accommodation at Ermo's Omarunga Camp

Day 4
Opuwo
Opuwo is the regional capital of Kaokoland but really has little to offer the average tourist. However, it is a convenient stop over before preceding into Damaraland. Accommodation at Ohakane Lodge

Day 5 & 6
Northern Damaraland
Leave Opuwo and head south, trying to avoid going via Orupembe unless you have a 4x4 and lots of time on your hands! Suggest staying in this area for 2 days where you have the possibility for either exploring the Hoanib riverbed, where you are likely to see desert elephant and rhino, or spend the day relaxing at Ongongo Falls. Accommodation at Fort Sesfontein Lodge or Etendeka Mountain Lodge

Day 7
Damaraland
Rejoin the 16 Day itinerary on Day 6 in Damaraland.

Additional Information
Vehicle Fully equipped 4x4 with fridge. Have a look at our car rental in Namibia page for details
Other During the rainy season section of the roads (especially around Sossusvlei and Damaraland) can get washed away so caution is advised. If you do need to cross a river that is running it is a good idea to walk through it first in order to gauge the strength of the flow and the water depth, if the water is to deep or running to strongly wait a few hours and try again, as the water level generally subsides pretty quickly.
