Kreb's Fat Mouse
wildlife of Namibia
Introduction: Data is scarce concerning Kreb's fat mouse (Steatomys krebsii) mainly due to a patchy distribution pattern, making it difficult to study. It is about the same size as the fat mouse, and is so called because of an accumulation of fat under the skin, regarded as a delicacy in many parts of Africa.
Distribution: Eastern Caprivi area.
Diet: Seeds, insects and vegetable matter.
Colouring: Dull orange-buff on the upper parts. White front feet and belly. The tail is the same colour as the upper parts.
Breeding: The young are born in the warmer, wetter months, with an average of 3 young per litter.
Size: Head tail length of 80mm. Tail 51mm. Weight: 24g.
