Tree Rat
wildlife of Namibia
Introduction: The tree rat is abundant in riverine Acacia woodland. Like the black-tailed tree rat, it is a nocturnal tree dweller, although it will take refuge in any tree, not just the Acacia. It uses its long tail for balance when climbing and running along thin branches, but is not as agile as it's black-tailed cousin and is known to spend time foraging on the ground.
Distribution: The north central region of Namibia only.
Diet: Leaves and bark of Acacia trees.
Colouring: Brown upper body and tail with white underparts with an underdeveloped black face mask.
Breeding: Similar breeding patterns to the black-tailed tree rat.
Size: Similar in size and weight to the black-tailed tree rat.
